2011 BMW M5 will get 5.5L V10 Engine

Still two years away, the next generation 2011 BMW M5 development is well underway and will arrive a year after the regular 5-series. Now Brits over at autocar have uncovered the Germans are working on a successor to the 507hp 5.0-liter V10 which has won countless awards including the engine of the year in 2005 & 2006 and has just been awarded the Engine of the year in the above 4-liter category for 2008.

The New 5.5-liter V10 will see power rise to 550hp and will be mated to BMW's new seven-speed M DCT doube-clutch transmission or the six-speed manual gearbox. To combat the extra displacement's effect on emissions and fuel economy, the new engine will likely get a direct injection turbo-charged unit and BMW's stop-start technology which automatically switches the engine off when it is not being used such as when the car is stopped in traffic.

The 2011 M5 will also benefit from an intelligent alternator control system which monitors the battery and makes use of energy that is usually wasted with its regenerative braking. The new technology increases the vehicle's power and fuel economy without sacrificing performance.

The picture above shows a protoype for the new BMW M5 caught testing last year when WCF exclusively uncovered the new engine will get twin-turbos.

5.5 liter V10 producing 550 hp...audi has more than that..i think it will be more than 550 hp, and why didn't they use their 8speed ?

I wonder how far those hp battles will go, tri-turbo 1500 hp engines mated with the quad-clutch 10 speed gearboxes?

i wonder what G-POWER will do with this M5 since they enhanced the current model realy well with a wopping 360 km/h !! it seems this one will be compared with the Buggatti Veyron !! loool

What worries me is the look of the new M5. Hope Chris Bangle's reading this!!

This doesn't make sense. Bumping the displacement AND adding twin turbos to a 500 HP V-10? I don't think HP is only going up by 50. I think the twin turbos that was spied is just for the new 550i or whatever it will be called. (The V8 that's going in the X6)

I don't think that BMW will waste all that time developing the 5 litre V10. It will probably just decide to add a couple of turbo's to the current engine. It makes more sense than going with a whole new engine.

Agreed, this is probably a regular 5-series with that twin turbo V8 found in the X6.

I was at a shop recently and the owner was proud to show off his Ferrari V10. The engine sounded just awful. I would rather have a boxer six, inline six, v8, boxer 12 or a an oil rig thumper than one of these in a luxury car. There is more to an engine than HP/KW numbers. You could probably buy a 3 series and a Cayman for the cost of a twin turbo V10 M5. You'd get a great a great sedan and a great sportscar instead of this wierd bangle-ism.

v6s_stink..thats just insane, who would want a 3 series and cayman over a twin turbo v10 m5...are u crazzyyy

by illest813 | May 8, 2008 8:18 PM
Maybe they're going to put some supercharger? I bet they won't ruin this V10 by putting twin or quad or more turbochargers!

by kimbo | May 8, 2008 9:05 PM
LMAO!!!!!!!!! v6s stink??? Ferrari's dont sound the real deal wen compared to other cars!!! And hey, I just hope they just do something good of this M5... I'm sick of hearing the 4-ring brigade brag about a car which manages to accelerate just as fast as the present M5 albeit with so much more horsepower!

ferrari V10, did u check out a F1 car, there are no v10 ferraris out there.

I think the update will most likely enter a csl M6 or so of the current car. the next gen hopefully looses some weight to up the game on dynamics rather than stupid quarter mile straight line numbers.
